I woke up just before noon today with the vague satisfaction of having done way too much programming in a short amount of time.  In three days I had to rewrite three months worth of tweaking and implementation as a result of a very abysmal rollback to our December build.  The weekend this happened had been particularly unique in that I got to just sit down and get work done with very little distraction, the project would have been fucked otherwise.  It was literally make or break and I’m glad I can look back at the situation with caution.

Well it’s April, and it’s a rainy day here in New York.  Last Friday we managed to port the dev-alpha to Windows which, somehow, came out the other end a little more unstable than I would have liked. On the other hand we consider the port one hell of a milestone.  I know what you’re thinking, and we WANT you to play it, but it’s just not quite “there” yet!

When I recorded devplay #3 the goal was to not exceed 10 minutes.  There’s been such a deluge of new features (that were already “in scope”) being put in that there’s no way in hell I was going to be able to cover them all. Luckily, if you’re reading this you may have time. And for that, I have information!

Triple X Tycoon takes procedurally generated content and applies it to the breadth of the adult entertainment industry. All characters, trends and markets will be generated on the fly so no two games should be the same. Sex is complicated, but the act can be enjoyable, right? Our game engine presents the player with what he or she wants to see, while the rest is being handled arduously under the hood within some matrix of complex algorithms. Completely unsexy!

Hiring is obviously important although where you hire from is just as much so. The idea is, you want younger talent? You hit the clubs or bars or wherever the younger crowds are hanging out at, which is era-specific. Meaning that if it’s the 90s, yeah you should find a rave and see if anybody wants to make some extra money. Sound sleazy? Well that’s because it is, which means your reputation might take a hit. At least until people find out you’re cool, which depends on how you run your business in general. Speaking of, your reputation is also broken into different brackets. Fact is, if you were a sleazy porn-producer in the 70s, and it’s 2009, you’ll probably get the benefit of the doubt. Now if you get caught shooting a scene outdoors in the age of smartphones, the ramifications will play out accordingly.

Once you get your performers on set, which varies because your talent might not be exclusive to the city, the fun starts. In the final game the performers, unless told otherwise, will just get started based on positions they might prefer. If you want them to go faster or harder without being specific, they’ll do what they want to do. About a week ago I partially overhauled the sex mechanics to allow a combo system (as see in the video above) in place of allowing the player to freely switch among positions. But the ability to tell your performers who should be on top/bottom remains easy to do and unchanged. Now you might talk to somebody and they might say “hey you know I’ve always wanted to try [insert combo here]” and you can try that.

In our Kamasutra expansion we do plan to substantially increase the amount of positions present in-game. Although backer positions will be present in the vanilla version.

The point here is that this applies to all in-game companies/studios. Your talent pool is the same talent pool your competitors will be using. Obviously the market responds in the same ways to their products as it would to your own. This is key to a good simulation. How does a market respond to you and your competition, how does the market react to the fact that there is competition at all? These are the things I want to address with Triple X Tycoon. I was talking to Soup about the current state of our engine and we both agreed that the game isn’t exactly being developed as an adult game no more so than it is being made as a new and modern addition to the tycoon genre as a whole.

Anyway, this is getting too wordy. I’ll stop talking at you and have you talk to me (and the team) instead. Visit our Chat page if you’re into the instant feedback thing, I’ve put some thought into closing the forums and migrating game discussion to a chat room. We’ll see!
